The church, built in 1843, is famous because there Captain Petko Voivoda had barricaded. The church is a typical three-shipped pseudo basilica. The iconostasis is panel, polychrome with tsar and festive register. The icons, 10 tsars and 27 festive, were painted during the second half of 19th Century. The most precious part of the church is the small apostolic frieze in the detached chapel, in the southern part of the temple, which dates back to the 17th -18th Century.
Nowadays, an ethnographic collection and photo-gallery devoted to the life and activity of Captain Petko Voivoda is housed in the old village school. History tells that he and his revolutionaries defended the village and themselves from the belfry of St. Pantheleimon Church against hundreds of infantrymen and troopers for as long as nine hours. There are sections with marks from bullets left from the irregular Ottoman party during the battle in 1879 on the west façade of the temple. At that time, Senkler (Hidaet pasha) defended the English interests in European Turkey during a mutiny and led the irregular Ottoman parties sent to raze the Bulgarian villages. Captain Petko arrived in the village of Pelevun on May 20 with his revolutionaries and Russian Cossacks. On May 21, they managed to save the village from the three-thousand oncoming bashi-bazouk (irregular Ottoman military party). During the battles, the Ottoman forces experienced more than 200 casualties. The residents of Pelevun managed to withdraw and escaped during the night.

According to Captain Petko himself after that battle, “The Senkler revolt in Dimotica and Dedeagach was crushed from that day on.”
