fortress of Apollonia

Apollonia (nowadays Sozopol) is one of the oldest towns on Bulgarian Thrace’s Black Sea coast. The first settlement on the site dates back to the Bronze Age. Undersea explorations in the region of the port reveal relics of dwellings, ceramic pottery, stone and bone tools from that era. Many anchors from the second and first millennium BC have been discovered in the town’s bay, a proof of active shipping since ancient times.

The town, at first called Antheia, was colonized in Thrace on the shore of the Pontus Euxinus, principally on a little island, by Anaximander (born 610-609 BC) at the head of Milesian colonists. The name was soon changed to Apollonia, on account of a temple dedicated to Apollo in the town, containing a famous colossal statue of the god Apollo by Calamis, 30 cubits high, transported later to Rome by Lucullus and placed in the Capitol. At various times, Apollonia was known as Apollonia Pontica (that is, Apollonia on the Black Sea, the ancient Pontus Euxinus) and Apollonia Magna (Great Apollonia).

Archaeologists’ team with director of the studies Krustina Panaiotova has found stony sepulchre dated to the 4th century b.c. It is male tomb and there is green stregul found near it. It is object, used from the athletes in the past. That Krustina Panaiotova’s team has found another tomb few days ago. It is supposed that might be one of gamester, because there were found also cons, dies and pieces. These finds are both from the necropolis at Sozopol. These year might be celebrated the 15th year since the repairing of the excavations there.

Esteemed find was found by the archaeological expedition of the National Historical Museum near the town of Sozopol by the team of Kristina Panayotova from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The archaeologists found tomb, covered with sands hill. Among the casual ceramic cemetery gifts of the dead person 2500 years ago citizen of Appolonia there is big ceramic bowl, with three lines of long circumscription of Hellenic language.
The circumscription should give much more shine up on the history of the first democratic state in our lands.
It is interesting that the bowl was found at the lineal plot of the necropolis ( the graveyard of the town, placed near the “harmanite” beach) of the oppressor Millet- Hritiai.
The governor of the biggest town-state has been living at the end of VІ- the beginning of V century before Christ. At 515 Hristiai has been commanding the percian fleet at the war against the Scythian, has been counselor of the Persian king Darii, one of the guides on the rebellion of the Greeks at Lesser Asia against the Persian dominion.
At 494 year, after the extinction of the rebellion, obviously he has been settling with his family at Appolonia Pontic.
