Three clay made idols were found just at the first day of the excavation works at Perperikon. These finds are some of the very first objects for the season 2008 at the ancient sanctuary between Haskovo and Kardjali. Those items were found during the cleaning process of the working areas.

Two of the clay figures have human shape, the third one has shape of bull. Those idols are used from the ancient citizens as gifts at the sanctuaries on Perperikon.
Professor Nikolay Ovcharov has told front of the Bulgarian National Radio that these figures confirms once again the relation between the ancient Thracian town and the Minoan culture.

Nikolai Ovcharov presents some of the post atractive items found this season at Perperikon

Three unique items from different periods from the history of Perperikon was found at the end of this archaeological season at the Thrace sanctuary. They were presented by prof. Nikolai Ovcharov.
Broze sword from the Trojan War- 13-12 century before Christ is one of the biggest attractions. The sword is well preserved and has been made by premium quality bronze, adds the archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov.
The second item is an idol and might deliver to us some more information about the magical rituals of the ancient citizens of Perperikon. Extremely interesting is the third item also. This original silver hasp of cloak is dated to the 6-5 century and has been possessed by aristocrat,says Nikolai Ovcharov. The two parts of it are forming human face, which is quite typical for the babrabian epoch.

News from Perperikon
Thracian tomb at about 3000 years was found at Perperikon by Krasimir Leshtakov. That was announced by Professor Nikolai Ovcharov, who told that it is result of studies at the foot of the historical hill. In consideration of treasure-hunter’s excavation near rock, the find has been explored and there has been found hew out sepulchre. That;s the one and only such sepulcher in the Perperikon area. Compared to the other 45 excavated objects, this is the first also with preserved cultural stratum. The find is engraved into monolythic rock at the end of the bronze and the beginning of the iron epoch. At the niche there is placed round feretory, shaped by dry walling and covered with paving stone.
“Probably it’s about symbolic furniture of chieftain or priest, perished somewhere else, because the sepulchre is empty” explain NIkolai Ovcharov. Near the tomb was found Roman ceramic. That confirms that the place has been honored in later epoch, adds Leshtakov. It has been object of people’s cult for the Thracians, different from the official religion, consider mister Leshtakov.



New finds from Perperikon

Ancient warehouse were found from archaeologists after excavations at the antique town of the Thracians Perperikon. Professor Nikolai Ovcharov and his colleagues has found four, completely preserved jars with stony lids and capacity between 160 and 200 liters. The vessels are found at culture stratum from the IV th century a.c.
” Probably at the jars has been preserved wine, because there is red precipitation on the walls and any soil is missing, which is typical for vessels used for food preserving ” adds Professor Ovcharov. The participators at the studies has cleaned the water depot at the top of Perperikon, which is six meters deep. The size of this ancient reservoir is 12 to 6 meters and capacity of 270 000 liters water. By Nikolai Ovcharov’s words this water depot is the biggest at the Balkan peninsula.

Head of cobra from the III - I space of time are some of the last finds at Perperikon.
two ceramic animal heads with important significance, one of which is unique,w ere found at the last finds at Perperikon,was announced by professor Nikolai Ovcharov. One of them is Dragon with open mouth and crest, the other one is broken cobra head, represented at attacking posture and open mouth. The whole is hold with ornaments. That finds are dated to III - I century before Christ and it was mentioned about the so called Zepina culture, archaeological term, tied to stronghold at the western Rhodopes, where for first time there was found ceramic from this type, adds professor Ovcharov.

Bronze gad of arrow, 35 centuries old was found at the approaches of the Perperikon’s castle. That find, large 12-13 centimeters is dating to near by 2 3 500 years or from the Trojan’s war, has told the menager of the excavations, mister Nikolai Ovcharov. Local citizen has found the metal object, when he has been tilling his field.
The keen is unique, there are no more than two or three known patterns from this kind in our land. They’ve been set only at arrows, which has been threw against assailing armies, particularize Nikolai Ovcharov.
