“Was set up this Glory Temple of our Most Holy Virgin Mary with help and outlays to all pious chritstians of this city. Year 1602 “
This inscription ( in Greek letters) written at marble plaque, situated inside the church is getting us back in the time, at the troubled times, when this temple has been built. It remains that this is the olderst church in Varna, fact that makes us asking ourself: What we knows about it? This inscription is so short.. We knows the church ‘ the Assu of Most Holy Merry’ in this condition, but it is due to reconstructions. Originally the Temple has been with dimensions 7 meters long and 8 meters weight. The first reconstruction adds little angle to west with enlargement of 2.4 meters. Much later, it is enlarged with 4.5 meters more and lastly, following the same direction there is enlargement 7.5 meters and rise with about 0,40 meters. That is the way how the temple has been shaped for the view in present time.
At the last couple of years the Temple has been fully renovated and we all owe a debt of gratitude to these three persons about it- Dimiter Lefterov, Lazar Vichev and Edelvais Nikolov and all other sponsors, donors and contributors.
For Varna’s citizens this Temple will always be “the one with the miraculous sacred image”. For the miraculous sacred image of Holy Virgin Mary with the infant (that is still at the church) we know the following legend. This icon has been found in the summer of year 1602 by Christian at the ‘Teke Karaach’ area, situated for about 3 km north-western direction to Varna. There has been situated old Bulgarian monastery dated to the Second Bulgarian Kingdom with water spring and three big elm-trees. Going to the spring for water, this person is seeing on the top of the middle one, the highest elm-tree an icon, just between the boughs. He is getting right back at town saying to the priest what he had saw. Word went around that sacred image, and there are so many Christians. front of their doors in short time.

Unique coin with the face of the Rome’s emperor Caracalla and Orpheus at the other side holding tunic is one of the hottest topic, because of the fact that she confirm the theory that Orpheus is Bulgarian. He is standing on caves that are symbolizing the Rhodopes and is performing with lyre, propped up on his left knee. This coin has been found by treasure-hunter 18 years ago, but subsequently has been redempted by famous businessman, who gave it to Nikolai Ovcharov’s archaeological expedition, that is working up on the studies at the Thracian settlement near the village of
Tatul. As Nikolai Ovcharov says, this bronze coin confirm that
Orpheus has Bulgarian and not Greek provenance. The fact that this coin has been mint at Philipopolis (nowadays Plovdiv) is proof that till the Roman epoch Orpheus has been one of the divinities of the city and the near centers in the eastern Rhodopes. There is only one coin like this. The rare copies are from the time of emperors Antoninus Pius, Geta and Caracalla. At these from Pii and Geta,
Orpheus is surrounded from listening to his music animals, when at the coins from Caracalla the musician is siting on cave, symbolizing the Rhodopes.
