thracian star map

The Thracian funeral burial mounds (tumuli) in the archaeological reserve of “Sborianovo”, near Isperih are built as a mirror projection of the starry sky and hides an astronomical information, older than the Babylonian one.  This hypothesis is proposed by the 76-year-old historian and ex-director of the Isperih museum – Iordan Stephanov.

The disposition of these tumuli recreates the constellations of the visible part of the sky from our latitude: Ursa major, Camelopardalis (giraffe), Auriga, Perseus, Cassiopeia, Lacerta, Cepheus and Draco (dragon). The size of the tumuli corresponds to the brightness of the stars.

The hypothesis of “Sborianovo”, being a huge ancient astronomical complex, is sustained by the so-called “Mysterious stone” found in the atrium of the central chamber of the King mound in “Sveshtari”.  According to the astronomer prof. Vladimier Dermendjiev, from the astronomical observatory of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the stone hides an ancient astronomical information.

Nobody can explain the purpose of building this astronomical chart, but the precision of copying the sky with it’s constellations speaks about the exceptional geodesic skills of the Thracian and their knowledge of the outer space.

The star map of “Sborianovo” is much more complicated than the representation of the constellation “Pleiades”, founded in January this year, in Val-d’Aoste, Italy.

According to the historical Iordan Stephanov, the biggest mystery is how the architect has planed his conception to be executed for the further three centuries.

Nikolai Ovcharov presents some of the post atractive items found this season at Perperikon

Three unique items from different periods from the history of Perperikon was found at the end of this archaeological season at the Thrace sanctuary. They were presented by prof. Nikolai Ovcharov.
Broze sword from the Trojan War- 13-12 century before Christ is one of the biggest attractions. The sword is well preserved and has been made by premium quality bronze, adds the archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov.
The second item is an idol and might deliver to us some more information about the magical rituals of the ancient citizens of Perperikon. Extremely interesting is the third item also. This original silver hasp of cloak is dated to the 6-5 century and has been possessed by aristocrat, says Nikolai Ovcharov. The two parts of it are forming human face, which is quite typical for the babrabian epoch.

Odrysian kingdom’s former capital was Uscudama or Odrysia which is now the city of Edirne, in the European part of Turkey. King Seuthes III later moved the capital to Seuthopolis, now located at the bottom of the “Koprinka” reservoir near the town of Kazanlak in Central Bulgaria.
That union of Thracian tribes that endured between the 5th century BC and the 3rd century BC consisted largely of present-day Bulgaria, spreading to parts of Romania, northern Greece and Turkey. It is the first Thracian kingdom that acquired power in the region, by the unification of many Thracian tribes under a single ruler, King Teres ( 450 BC - 431 BC ). According to the Greek historians Herodotus and Thucydides, a royal dynasty emerged from among the Odrysian tribe in Thrace around the end of the sixth century BC,

coin which confirm that Orpheus is Bulgarian
Unique coin with the face of the Rome’s emperor Caracalla and Orpheus at the other side holding tunic is one of the hottest topic, because of the fact that she confirm the theory that Orpheus is Bulgarian. He is standing on caves that are symbolizing the Rhodopes and is performing with lyre, propped up on his left knee. This coin has been found by treasure-hunter 18 years ago, but subsequently has been redempted by famous businessman, who gave it to Nikolai Ovcharov’s archaeological expedition, that is working up on the studies at the Thracian settlement near the village of Tatul. As Nikolai Ovcharov says, this bronze coin confirm that Orpheus has Bulgarian and not Greek provenance. The fact that this coin has been mint at Philipopolis (nowadays Plovdiv) is proof that till the Roman epoch Orpheus has been one of the divinities of the city and the near centers in the eastern Rhodopes. There is only one coin like this. The rare copies are from the time of emperors Antoninus Pius, Geta and Caracalla. At these from Pii and Geta, Orpheus is surrounded from listening to his music animals, when at the coins from Caracalla the musician is siting on cave, symbolizing the Rhodopes.
