The name of the present-day Ladja neighborhood of Ivailovgrad can be found in eparchial lists from the 9th to the middle of the 10th Century. This is the earliest written source about this outlying district, whose name at that time was Litica, which meant a headquarters for a bishop.

St. Konstantin and Elena Monastery,Ivailovgrad municipality The monastery is situated three kilometers southwest of the Ladja neighborhood in Ivailovgrad. According to the legend, there was a Thracian shrine and Roman temple-sanctuary at that same place. The cloister is presumed to have existed from 13th Century. During the Ottoman violence in the 18th Century, the monastery decayed. In 1872, the monastery was restored with contributions from the local population from Ortakioi region.

The church in the monastery is a three-shipped pseudo basilica with a semicircular apsis. The walls are built of stones soldered with plaster.

The monastery was the economic, cultural and spiritual center of the region, and is, at present, the only Orthodox monastery in the region. The temple’s feast is celebrated on September 8.
